When the holidays are over, you may be in need of a getaway. What better time to plan a snowy mountain retreat to Steamboat Springs. Whether you enjoy skiing or snowboarding, Steamboat Springs is THE place to hit the slopes! Here are the top five reasons why February is the best month to visit:
1. THE MOST IDEAL WINTER CONDITIONS
Early season snow can be minimal, leaving mountain terrain subpar. But by February, the snow levels are typically at their deepest, and the cold winter air brings the finest champagne powder. And the best part? The snow is still falling in February! (Note: Steamboat has good backcountry skiing, but inexperienced tourists should not try it. We have no back bowls.)
2. MORE TERRAIN TO COVER
Traditionally, by the month of February, snowfall has been consistent throughout the season. This leaves most mountains – and Steamboat Ski Resort, with fully open terrain, lifts, and runs. This can be incredibly enticing, as visitors will have the opportunity to avoid crowds and explore more of the mountain each day. Fully open terrain allows skiers and snowboarders to choose their favorite runs without limitation and progress in their skill set.
3. GREAT WEATHER + TONS OF SNOW
The cooler temperatures in February allow for excellent snowing conditions. But don't let the cold weather discourage you from planning that ski trip you've been dying to take. At the base area, you will find several restaurants, a yurt bar, and fire pits to keep you warm after you're done hitting the slopes. There is also awesome technical gear available to keep you nice and toasty, so you can spend less time feeling cold and more time enjoying the mountain.
4. AVOID HOLIDAY CROWDS
December, January, and March bring in a lot of travelers for the holidays. For the most part, February sees a break from higher capacity and is generally less crowded. This gives skiers and riders a more serene experience on the mountain. Liftlines will be shorter, and you’ll have a good chance of getting first dibs on freshies. February still has one holiday – President’s Day. We recommend booking lodging for that weekend ahead of time.
5. LEVEL UP YOUR SKILL
At this point in the season, it’s likely that you’ve been on the snow a few times and had enough practice to regain your poise. You’re probably in top-notch shape for your ability level and have refreshed your muscle memory for skiing or snowboarding. It’s a great time to get after the snow quicker, level up to a blue or back run, try out the terrain park, and hit the slopes with more confidence.
