Santa Saddles Up, December

"Santa Saddles Up" is a cherished annual event in Steamboat Springs, celebrating the festive season with a unique Western twist. The highlight of the event is Santa Claus making a grand entrance on horseback, riding from the Torian Plum area down the slopes into Steamboat Square. During the procession, Santa is accompanied by local figures such as Bob Dapper and Dean Vogelaar.

Following his arrival, there will be meet-and-greet sessions with Santa, where children can take photos and share their holiday wishes. Adding a sweet touch to the festive atmosphere, attendees can enjoy complimentary hot chocolate and cupcakes. Additionally, Skeeter's Ice Rink will be open for skating, providing even more fun for families during this joyful occasion.

New Year's Eve Light Up Snowcat Parade and Fireworks, December

Steamboat Springs hosts one of the most unique New Year's Eve parties in the country. Blending its rich alpine traditions with festive flair, the New Year's Eve Light Up Snowcat Parade and Fireworks begins with five snowcats adorned with thousands of twinkling lights descending the mountain, creating a mesmerizing spectacle. 

Following the snowcats, Steamboat SnowSports instructors perform synchronized skiing routines down the slopes, each carrying glowing torches that illuminate their path. As the clock strikes midnight, a breathtaking fireworks display illuminates the sky above the resort, marking the arrival of the new year in spectacular fashion.

Steamboat MusicFest, January

How about kicking off your year with over 200 hours of incredible music in one-of-a-kind venues, paired with endless skiing opportunities? Exciting, right?

Each January, Steamboat becomes a hub for music lovers as MusicFest brings an extraordinary blend of Texas and Americana performances to the city. Legendary performers and rising stars take center stage for six days at Steamboat Ski & Resort, offering a vibrant musical backdrop to winter sports activities.

The event features concerts in an eclectic mix of venues, including barn-like stages, saloon-inspired setups, and sophisticated ballroom-style tents. For those looking to relax, there are smaller, intimate spaces with comfy seating and, sometimes, the inviting glow of a fireplace to accompany the music.

Although tickets are needed for the majority of events, you can still enjoy free concerts happening on the Steamboat Stage at Gondola Square over MusicFest weekend. Don’t forget to stay updated with the festival schedule.

Bud Light Cowboy Downhill, January

The Bud Light Cowboy Downhill is another unique annual event in Steamboat Springs where professional rodeo cowboys trade their saddles for skis in a spirited competition. For five decades, this event blends Western rodeo traditions with alpine skiing, creating a spectacle that's both thrilling and entertaining.

The event is packed with Western-themed festivities in Gondola Square, including 4-H farm animal exhibits, delicious food and refreshments at Timber & Torch Grill, and a fun learn-to-rope clinic. The main attraction is watching cowboys and cowgirls tackle a dual slalom course, jump obstacles, lasso a person, saddle a horse, and race to the finish line. 

Adding to the excitement are special performances by the Denver Broncos Cheerleaders and fantastic live music on the Steamboat Stage, featuring incredible concerts. It’s a perfect way to celebrate your time in Steamboat, soak up the vibrant winter atmosphere, and connect with the local community. 

Cowboy Up Drone Show, January

Designed to celebrate the region's rich Western heritage through a modern technological spectacle, the Cowboy Up Drone Show is a captivating event where the skies above Steamboat Resort come alive with a meticulously choreographed display that embodies the spirit of the town.

Hundreds of illuminated drones perform synchronized movements, forming dynamic patterns and shapes that honor the area's Western traditions and alpine charm. Steamboat Winter Carnival, February

The Steamboat Winter Carnival stands out as the most celebrated and possibly the largest annual event in Steamboat. With deep-rooted traditions, this century-old festivity invites locals and visitors to immerse themselves in the joy and wonder of winter.

Initially created to lift spirits during the long, harsh winters, the carnival has transformed into a spectacular winter celebration. Imagine children and adults on skis being towed by horses along a snow-packed Main Street or daredevil skiers soaring through fiery hoops. This five-day winter extravaganza is brimming with excitement, featuring street performances, vibrant parades, and a city buzzing with winter sports enthusiasts.

Of all the highlights of the Steamboat Winter Carnival, the Night Extravaganza is among the most anticipated events. At Howelsen Hill, skiers and snowboarders illuminated with LED lights, glowing sticks, and road flares glide down the slopes, creating a breathtaking display. The star of the evening is the iconic Lighted Man, a skier outfitted with a spectacular LED suit featuring over 250 colors and a fireworks-launching backpack, making for a one-of-a-kind show.

Held every year in the second week of February, regardless of weather, this event stands as a true tribute to winter and a wonderful chance to experience the heritage of an American ski town.

WinterWonderGrass Festival, February

February brings even more music to Steamboat with the incredible WinterWonderGrass Festival. This three-day celebration of bluegrass music, craft beer, and mountain culture features performances from over 20 bands across multiple stages.

Music enthusiasts can enjoy a diverse lineup of bluegrass and roots artists, with shows spread across four stages, three of which are set under heated tents for maximum comfort. To complement the music, a selection of Colorado's finest craft breweries will be on-site, serving up delicious beer.
