Fish Creek Falls is top of our list of amazing Steamboat hiking trails. One reason this 280 ft. waterfall is such a popular destination is because it’s easily accessible for the entire family. A short walk down a gravel path lets you view the lower falls. If you’re up for a moderate hike, you can get an even better view of Upper Fish Creek Falls and Long Lake, and the Routt National Forest.
We love the Hot Springs Trail hike for those looking for a less strenuous hike. The trail leads directly to the Strawberry Hot Springs, a must-do on your trip itinerary. The trailhead is located at the Mad Creek Trailhead parking area along a small creek and ends at the Strawberry Hot Springs (the main entrance will be within sight). If you decide to hike into the hot springs, make sure you’re prepared with your swimsuit, towels, and reservations made in advance.
The Uranium Mine Trail and Emerald Mountain via Blackmere Trail are popular hiking choices if you’re up for a more challenging trail. You’ll see wildlife, native vegetation, and amazing sights!

Fly fishing alone is reason enough to head to Steamboat this year! Don’t miss a chance to catch rainbow trout, grayling, northern pike, and walleye in our local lakes, reservoirs, and streams. Our guide to fly fishing blog has some inspiration and tips to help you plan a fishing trip.
Fall temps make a great horseback riding experience, and we can’t think of a better time to enjoy a classic Steamboat experience. Head down to Saddleback Ranch for a horseback ride excursion, capture photographs, and learn about cattle at this multi-generation ranch. Seasonally, they also offer a fantastic wagon ride and dinner experience. You’ll take a horse-drawn wagon to their Double Dollar Lodge, where you’ll be welcomed with drinks as you take in the view. Then dinner is served! You’ll want to make reservations as far in advance as possible.
Play a round of golf in a stunning setting at the Rollingstone Ranch Golf Club. This 18-hole course (designed by Robert Trent Jones II) features incredible views of the Yampa Valley while Fish Creek winds through part of the course. The 70 bunkers and large, undulating bent grass greens make this a genuinely championship-caliber course to be enjoyed by players of all skill levels.
